City of Bergamo

Bergamo provides a unique synthesis of cultural and artistic history and modern developments. As a meeting point between different cultures and for centuries a border area between the Milanese Duchy and the Republic of Venice, the Bergamo area is very rich in history and culture. Cultural influence dates back to the Roman period. Remnants of this period can be still found in the old city "Città Alta", close to the Main Library and inside the Dome.
It is a unique town keeping intact the old medieval structure: narrow streets, tall houses with picturesque windows and doors and often secret passages, gathered within the old Venetian walls, the examples of a special new building architecture with bastioni and terrapieni. Along some streets (e.g. via Pignolo) the Venice Republic influence on Bergamo is still witnessed by a series of sixth and seventh century buildings, at the time merchants' and aristocrats' houses, and by the restructuring of Piazza Vecchia.
Lorenzo Lotto and the city of Bergamo: it is not only the memory of a long stay, which began in 1513 with the Altar Piece of St. Bartholomew and ended in 1525 in the Stories of Mary in St. Michael at the White Well, with the ideal extension of the commitments taken for the intarsia of the choir of Santa Maria Maggiore: and not even the remark that there are many churches in Bergamo (from the Holy Spirit to St. Bernardino to the two churches dedicated to the patron saint, St. Alexander: St. Alexander of the Cross and St. Alexander in Colonna) to be decorated with altarpieces by Lotto; nor is it sufficient to recall the many figures of Bergamo (including the mysterious Lucina Brembati) whose portraits he painted.
Bergamo Province includes one of the richest industrial areas in Lombardia, the region is classified as one of the 4 economic engines of Europe. Recent industrial achievements include the establishment of the technological private park Red Kilometer designed by architect Jean Nouvel and owned by Brembo in 2004, the main brake manufacturer for Ferrari, Porsche and many other important automotive firms.
The Gewiss Group, well known for the domotica production, has developed the main site in a beautiful vineyard area close to the lake.
Italcementi, Italy's first cement producer, with branches all over the world, is another world recognized industry in the area.
SIAD, founded in Bergamo in 1927, is one of the most important chemical groups in Italy and operates in sectors connected with the world of gases, such as engineering, welding and industrial goods, healthcare services.
The Tenaris Group, steel pipes multinational manufacturer, is a strong supporter of cultural events for modern art.
