Presentation (back to the top)

Since 1978, Italian scholars have been organizing an informal meeting on Afro-Asiatic linguistics every two or three years. The Meeting was originally plannes for Italian researchers engaged with the comparative or descriptive study of Afro-Asiatic languages, as an opportunity to present their work in progress and to exchange scholarly information.

Form and scope of the Meeting have changed over the years (click here for an overview on the history of the Meeting and a complete list of the proceedings) and more and more international participants and contributors have been attending. At the last edition (Florence 2001), 18 of the 44 papers were read by scholars coming from abroad, from other countries of the European Union as well as from Russia, Poland, Hungary, Switzerland, Israel, and the United States of America.

The XI Italian Meeting of Afro-Asiatic Linguistics will be held at the University of Bergamo from Thursday  5th to Saturday 7th June 2003. In the context of the DOREK research-project ‘Critical edition with translation and concordances of Christian Neo-Aramaic poems from Iraqi Kurdistan’ (University of Turin), the Meeting in Bergamo will host a section on Neo-Aramaic languages and literatures. Neo-Aramaic scholars are warmly invited to contribute.

A tentative program of the 11th Italian Meeting of Afro-Asiatic Linguistics is now available on-line: Program (click here!).

Call for papers (back to the top)

Given the informal nature of the Meeting, contributions on the comparison or description of Afro-Asiatic or Neo-Aramaic languages will be accepted as presentations of research projects, work in progress or final results. Papers should last 20 minutes + 10 for short discussion. Participants who are interested in the publication of their papers in the proceedings will receive indications on format and deadline in the course of the Meeting.

You are kindly requested to inform us before February, 28th, 2003 whether you wish to attend the Meeting or the Neo-Aramaic panel and communicate the title of the paper you intend to read. You can e-mail to a.mengozzi@tiscali.it or write to the following address (back to the top):

Travel Information (back to the top)

By plane:         Several flights land in Bergamo (Orio al Serio airport), sometimes advertised as Milan-Orio al Serio. The airport is quite close to the town, so you can take a bus (running every 30 min.; Zani, tel. +39-035-678678 / + 39-035-678750) to/from the railway station (Bergamo Lower Town), or a taxi.

If your flight lands in Milan (Linate or Malpensa) you can take a bus (Air Pullman, tel. +39-0331-230830; FNM, tel. +39-02-48066771; STAB, tel +39-035-318472) to Milan - Stazione Centrale [sta't:sjo:ne t∫en'tra:le] and from there a train to Bergamo (see below). From Malpensa there are also trains to Milan - Stazione Nord (Malpensa Express): from there (Piazzale Cadorna) you can take the underground (Metropolitana) to the Stazione Centrale, and then a train to Bergamo.

By train:         There are trains between Milan (Stazione Centrale [sta't:sjo:ne t∫en'tra:le]) and Bergamo every hour. The trip Milan-Bergamo lasts around 1 hour. For more information, please consult the timetable of the Italian Railway Company.

In Bergamo:   Buses run almost every ten minutes from the railway station in Bergamo (Lower Town)  to the Upper Town, where the Meeting will be held (see Rettorato in Via Salvecchio [sal'vek:jo], C on the map of the Upper Town).

Bus no.1A takes you to Colle Aperto, while no. 1 takes you to the station of the funiculare [funiko'la:re], by which you can easily reach the Upper Town with the same bus ticket. A ticket (0,90 €; a ticket for10 trips is also available) may be used for 1 hour from stamping on various lines (buses and funicolare). Please, note that tickets may not be bought on board, but are available at all newspaper kiosks, in the railway station and elsewhere in town.

For further information, you can visit the site of APT Bergamo (Tourist Office). Do not hesitate to contac us for any problem you may have in planning your journey or reserving a room.

Hotels (back to the top)

The sessions of the Meeting will be held at the University building called ‘Salvecchio’ [sal'vek:jo] in the Upper Town (see Rettorato [ret:o'ra:to] in Via Salvecchio, C on the map of the Upper Town). Since the number of hotel rooms available in Bergamo (especially in the Upper Town) is quite limited, early reservation would be advisable.

Please make your own accommodation arrangements, contacting the hotels listed below directly (check their location on the maps). The prices listed above include taxes, services and breakfast, but might change in the following months. The hotels in the Lower Town are close to the bus stations to the Upper Town (Bus 1A or 1 + funicolare; see above).

For further information, you can go to the site of APT Bergamo (Tourist Office). Do not hesitate to contact us for any problem you may have in planning your journey or reserving a room.
